I've died so many times I've lost track, many (if not most of) the deaths were completely out of my control. Two examples:
I step on a rolling boulder trap. It kills my kitten and nearly kills me. I "hear distant thunder". After healing, I descend to the first level of the gnomish mines, and promptly come up against a dwarf king (on the first level!). I run away, and descend to the second level, where I am assaulted and surrounded by about 8 gnomes, 3 gnome lords, and a gnome king.
then...
I'm in the mines. A pony appears, and starts killing me. I attack it (since I'm too slow to run away). When I'm nearly dead, I pray to Mars. He's 'pleased', but doesn't see fit to heal me.
