I believe it is more a level of maturity to see that the condition of man is to seek the lowest potential state. Like a boulder rolling down hill, mankind is destined to seek the point of lowest potential energy. Only through a objective, reasoned approach to life can one fight off the urge to seek rest.

To believe that only mankind has the ability to reason out right and wrong, and that right and wrong are based on the perceptions of fickle, selfish humanity is to believe that there is no right and wrong. Only a higher law, with objective standards of right and wrong, keeps our world from devolving into a state of terrorism, selfism, moral buggery, and hedonism (sp).

Don't believe that convincing yourself of something less painful is considered reason. Reason could be considered logical thought without concept of self.
