"one day we will have computers weighing no more than 1,5 tons" was an expert's opinion in 1949 (ENIAC had 30 tons and over 17.000 vacuum tubes in 1946)
so, yeah, they were VERY SF with their computers back then. But nowadays the best use for punchcards is - you said it - notepaper.
What I like about PR is that you can use the series as a "what people-thaught-the-future-might-bring" guide throughout the years. It's also interesting to check the changes in attitude: In the early series, they had no problem blasting away planets, later on that was unbelievably barbaric (only the villians did that then); they also became all "greenpeacy" later and then they became metaphysical in a "huh?" kind of way, which was when I stopped reading it.
But Perry Rhodan is one of the reasons I became a physicist. *little blush* |
