I hadn't heard about that specific cartoon. I know about The Far Side, just not that one in particular. Do you have any idea when that cartoon was published?
Honestly, I am not sure where I got the name from, as I have been using it for over 20 years and my memory doesn't go that far back. I started using it back in the early 1980's, when my parents bought a brand new spiffy "Commodore 64" computer, and I would get games for it and need to provide a name for myself, or the computer opponent. I put in Zzyzzx. I have used it for various things ever since. Eventually I started using it for my online gaming name and since I was online with that, I now use it on message boards.
I often get asked if it's based on Zzyzx Road, on I-15, the highway between Los angeles and Las Vegas. Having been there, I know of the place, but I doubt I got it from there, as I never saw the road until many years after I had been using it.
