A stackpointer, sometimes a built-in internal register, points to the top element of a stack. By convention, this is an empty location, and the stackpointer is updated prior to adding elements to the stack.

My name is Alex, i'm a 3-rd year student at University of California, Santa Cruz, studying to be a Computer Engineering and Math major. I'm a girl-geek indulging in assembly language and computer architecture. Woo-hoo! Maybe someday i'll graduate, too!
