I'm a graduate student doing research that has applications in either biology or intelligence gathering. One guess which of the two is paying the freight.
I get into a lot of debates about the ethics of my work, but I'm happy to be involved, as a number of my close friends are on the sharp end around the world. As for when it's applied domestically, I'm not too concerned, since cell phones with GPS already provide more information about a person than any system I could build.
However, having grown up a desert rat with a bit of dislike of that whole "gubment" thing, I find the irony of my new position amusing. Actually, that's probably what's motivated me to do a lot of what I do, since I read stories of youthful insurgents with the same kind of empathy that a dad has for the frat boy taking his daughter on a date. |
