Ah, ok, that explains it... by ShadowSystems 2018-09-02 21:59:14
First thing I can think of is to unplug the machine, take it apart, pull out the sound card, clean the card contacts, reseat it firmly in the slot, put the thing back together, plug it back in, & try again.
If that fails to get the card working then look for appropriate drivers: OldVersion.Com is a good place to start.
If that doesn't do it then right-click the sound card to get the properties.
Check to make sure there are no yellow exclamation points that indicate a conflict with another device, an improperly configured device, or otherwise some reason W98SE can't use it.
Right-click the exclamation point, find out the issue, & try to resolve it.
Failing that, replace the card entirely with a different one.
Chances are good that the problem that causes the first card to fail won't also cause the 2nd one to do it as well.
If it does then I'm at a loss.

What make & model is it?
Does it require setting the IRQ's?
If it does then God Have Mercy On Your Soul.

Do you want/need any DOS/W95/W98 era software to fiddle with on such a machine?
Send me an email (my nick at Gmail) & I'll send them over.
If you like AD&D I've got the Gold Box set with Pools of Radiance/Gateway to the Savage Frontier.
...
I've just looked at that entire folder.
I'll send the list via email since it won't fit in a post.
