They've sold a gift card for n$. Now lets say their average profit is 25% on each sold item. So we'll guess some numbers. The cards value was 200 and you where willing to add another 200 that makes 400 and from that their profit would have been 100 after you got the shiny thing. Now that gift-card will expire and oups... they will have a profit of 200. Case closed.
