I thought that since we have been here about hundred thousand years and we have currently four-six thousand years of written human history. The natural state from what I understand was the clan/family.

One man, one woman, the grandparents, the aunts and uncles and cousins, and great aunts/uncles, etc.

It takes a village to raise a child. The nuclear family model is not very old (possibly eighty - hundred years)

course, that is my opinion, I could be wrong...
