They even took over some of Wagner and made it humorous, and THAT takes some doing.
Sorry, thanks anyway, but I detest opera. Always have.
I think that Looney Tunes use of classical so many classical operatic scores as background for chases and various other crazy cartoon things was the best possible use for the stuff.
But for those who like it, apparently there's nothing like it. They can have my share, I will gladly relinquish it no questions asked. Here, take my tickets. Please.
Symphonies, I mostly enjoy. Had a box seat for the Berlin Philharmonic when I was stationed there, cost me two months pay, but was worth every penny. Herbert Von Karajan, conducting. Stunning music. Piano concerti, pipe organ pieces, string ensembles, even brass within reason. Some ballet, I actively enjoy (though sadly not the Nutcracker or the Swan - sick of them both).
But I never found any (not even one) opera which I actually enjoyed, or even really could tolerate at all, and I have attended performances of many operas, done by several different opera companies, over a fairly long span of time. (But after the first few to see what the fuss was all about, none by my choice; there were always extenuating circumstances - and the 'circumstances' were always a woman who wanted to see an opera, if you must know. Yeah, OK, I'm a sucker. But a sucker with REALLY GOOD earplugs, and a lot of patience. I can sit through any opera, if it makes her happy and I've got my custom-molded ear plugs.)
The closest I can get to opera is comic, satirical operetta, and only Gilbert and Sullivan at that. ("The Mikado" is priceless. "He's got her on the list! He's got her on the list! And I don't think she'll be missed!")
