I've been debating use of a password safe for a while. I have the perception that I'm using the "Forgot your password" links on sites I visit on a "less than throw-away" basis, and regenerating them considering password strength standards is getting mentally taxing. I'd rather spend my personal CPU cycles on other things.
I recall mentions here of using them. What are UFies using, and why did you choose that option? If you started with one, and switched, what motivated you to make a move?
My research has narrowed it to two candidates: KeePass and LastPass. I'm having trouble deciding which of the two philosophies to settle on (non-cloud primary storage with cloud access to the data, vs. primary cloud storage)
My old-school brain likes the idea of KeePass where I retain control over where the primary storage resides. Trouble is that (looking longer-term) I might need access to the container under *nix, and current (2.x) versions require Mono for .NET compatibility. Another positive: it's FOSS.
LastPass is all-cloud access (so OS-agnostic) but both has a minor cost (for enhanced features) and is proprietary. Cloud access has me concerned from an access perspective as my employer has web blocking or software installation rules in place that may deny access. "May" because I haven't tested that particular boundary.
I've seen where one can import data from the other, so the idea of switching is possible, but I'd rather not go through that pain unless there's a very compelling reason to.
One other hopefully very long-term point of consideration (as I'm going through some of this with Mom's accounts) is providing some method for mrsandyz (or the boys) to access the safe in case I get hit by a bus.
My primary goal is for ease-of-use for the whole process, not just "how does the GUI work?" Phone/tablet access is a consideration, but the need for it is not a deal-killer. The current scenario is frustrating enough. I want a solution, not additional problems.
I've seen the reviews on the intarwebs -- likely too many of them -- and my trust level for all of them has sunk because their either aged, undated, unspecific, or conflicting. I'm more trustworthy of opinions here.
It's a vacation day for me (\0/), and I need act on a slew of to-do list items, so my check-ins here to answer follow-up questions may be delayed. Thanks. |
