I was all that was left of Tier III when The Idiot was done gouging out all of the guts of my staff. I was also the highest-paid of the techs which were left, and also what she called "the ringleader" in the "insubordination" which was constantly occuring to "challenge and undermine" her "leadership.
(That's actually known as "Telling The Wanna-Be Lord and Master, that she could NOT be more wrong! OR MORE STUPID!" And the ONLY reason anyone "followed" this woman ANYWHERE was out of morbid curiosity to see what she would SCREW UP NEXT!!)
(And yes, before it was through, I told her to her face, in those exact words, just how wrong, and how stupid, she had been and was being.
At a meeting of all the staff, I actually said that the ABSOLUTE WORST POSSIBLE THING which could happen to a tech group like that one, would be for a completely non-technical person to be placed in charge.
A person put in the top manager's slot, with NO technical abilities whatsoever, an inflated ego which kept the person from noticing the total lack of competence, and one who had an extremely debilitating personality disorder which, besides being abrasive and nearly impossible to cope with, did not allow her to realize that she was destroying the group.
The IDIOT said something like, "The lack of technical skills there could be said to apply to ME, you know!" and I said, "Yes, as well as all the rest of it. I rest my case. This is exactly why we are currently falling apart as a working department."
(It took THAT much "IN YOUR FACE, FOOL!" for it to sink in that I --WAS-- talking about her, and no one else!)
So she decided to "punish" me. She had the phone department people (the U was the third-largest telephone exchange in the state at that time; we had our own phone company) change the way the machine portioned out the calls. ALL calls originated TO MY DESK ALONE. All they had to do was tell it to send all calls to a "Tier III Tech" and since I was all that was left of that level, .... ring-ring!! And it was ring-pick up-deal with stupidity-hang up-ring-pick up-deal-hang up-ring .... constantly.
The volume of traffic was such that at that time of the semester, I could almost ALWAYS clear the caller's problem, fill out the form recording the contact, and click back into the queue for the next call before the phone tree over-loaded and spilled calls onto the Tier II lines.
And when I figured out what she was trying to do (drive me off the campus), it became a thing of honour NOT to let her manage it. No way was this harridan going to get the better of me. John Henry, get your hammer.
I kept it going like that for an entire morning and through lunch, and the Tier II and Tier I people were down to playing on-line network "Hearts" on their computers with each other around the room. They got so bored they complained to the idiot-child about it. One of them even called the IT Director and let him know what was going on, which fixed the problem pretty quickly. (The IT Director calling, combined with one of the other guys hacking the phone machinery, put the queue back right-side-up in direct defiance of her ordering him not to, got everyone got back to work as usual.)
I ran extra classes (Internships for which not only did the student workers get paid, but they could get credits toward their IT and CS degrees for them, on my own time when enough of them wanted to learn something. Things like how to compile a custom kernel, or to build a LAMP server from the source code, given a compiler-equipped operating system installation and access to the required libraries and utilities.
And they could spend all the time they NEEDED if they had to take a dump. Oddly enough, before the Moronic Manager of Doom arrived, none of them took advantage of the "liberal" break policies.
(JUST THE ONE MORE PART, I PROMISE!!) |
