Why my other neighbor's lawn will look like crap by SnArL 2014-05-05 07:11:19
come July: (SSLR)

We're under drought restrictions, and only allowed to water twice a week. These people water their lawn EVERY FREAKING DAY. And it's not new sod (the only time Ft. Worth will allow you to water on a daily basis).

Here's what's wrong with that: if you water every day, your grass will not be drought resistant. When it gets over 100F every day, your grass is going to burn because the roots are shallow. Watering once or twice a week will force the roots to grow DOWN to get at the moisture. When you water every day, the roots stay close to the surface.

They cut their grass too short. Cutting your grass less than 1.5" discourages deep rooting. The grass focuses on growing UP so it can gather more photosynthetic energy. Leaving it at 2" to 3" tall allows the roots to grow deeper. This was my problem last year...the guy we had cutting our lawn cut it too short.

When July and August roll around, my lawn will still be lush and green. Theirs will be brown and dead.
