of the boss, or originally the Master or Mistress, and the servant (employee these days) is called in from the bare-floor areas where they work to the carpeted part of the place for a reprimand, or a demand that they explain their actions.

It is dated to the mid-1800s by the "Oxford Dictionary of Idioms."

The definition elaborates with the related idiom:

"To be 'called on the carpet' is equivalent to receiving a scolding, the metaphor being taken from a servant called into the presence of the master or mistress from an uncarpeted into a carpeted room."

No puppies or kitties were harmed in the making of this idiom.
