contains 8 imperial bits, but probably 10 decimal ones, er, bits.

So either the bits are same size and metric bytes are bigger, OR the Imperial bits are larger.

Because so many "software" works with bytes, and runs equally well (or badly) on the continent as they do in the UK (who probably don't have an Emperor any more, but still have Empirical Units) ... it must be the bytes that happen to work on both systems alike.
So yes, it's the Imperial BITS who are about 25 % (2/8th) bigger than the decimal ones.
