If the Caster fails their Concentration check, if someone manages to deal the Caster damage while they're trying to cast, if it fails to beat the Target's Spell Resistance (SR), or if someone Dispells it before it can take effect, or if you encounter an AntiMagicField (AGF)...
There are so many ways a spell can fail to deliver the intended results, and those are just the ones that DON'T involve a Wild Surge Table.
You add the WST into the mix, and you can kiss your spell goodbye.
(And sometimes the Caster, the Party, & the world they were standing upon.)
Better to have a physical weapon.
Unless you roll a Natural1 on your Attack/ToHit roll, called a Fumble, or you break the weapon, or you miss the Target, you can be pretty sure of dealing the damage you intended.
Your Wand of Fireballs may deliver awe inspiring damage, but it's worthless against someone whom either has a high Resistance or an Immunity to Fire.
Your Bow may not deliver as much damage, but it's kind of hard to concentrate on a counter spell with my fletching sprouting from your eye.
