Is health insurance immoral? by Ol_Gunner2014-03-07 12:35:21
Point of order... by firehawk 2014-03-07 20:06:59
They profit off the misery and illness by finding new and creative ways to not cover it.

Yes, everything is there in the fine print, if you look hard enough.

But what insurance is INTENDED to do (from a social compact point of view, or the combined "insured plus doctor" point of view) is to cover medical expenses for a monthly fee. What insurers do is find small ways to break that overall contract with riders, exceptions, and minutiae.

Doctors and nurses profit when they HEAL misery and suffering. Insurance companies profit when they DON'T PAY for the healing.

Huge difference. And yes, for-profit insurance is therefore immoral, because it attempts to NOT pay for what it has agreed (as a general principle) to pay for. And those it preys on are in need and often desperate. Only scumbags prey on desperate people.
