Is health insurance immoral? | by Ol_Gunner | 2014-03-07 12:35:21 |
| Yeah, I was in a hurry and did not fully qualify |

the statement in the TLP. I did fully qualify it later in that post though. For-profit health insurance is immoral.
And I explained why. It is because it is far too tempting to commit fraud and thus profit from other people's misery. As you stated, health insurance profit from people's health. Actually, they profit far more from people not getting health care services; whether this is because they are not needed, or because the treatments are denied. Health insurance companies do not have much power over whether people are healthy or not. But they DO have a lot to say about whether people get treatment or not. So if they want to increase profit (and what for-profit company does not want to do that?) their only option really is to deny treatment.
In this way the insurance companies act as limiters of health care costs. As I mentioned in a subsequent post, socialized (and any other type, really) health care must have a way to limit cost. To ration services. To reduce costs to the point that they are sustainable. And the people doing the denying of treatment are NOT qualified to determine what treatment to deny to which subscriber in order to get the most benefit for the most people out of limited resources. IMO only medical experts armed with the best possible information about cost and outcomes of various procedures are.
Other posts under this TLP seem to conflate health care providers with health care insurers. And arguing that health care providers must be paid equitable and profitably. I agree with that second statement; however, health care insurers are NOT health care providers. They are the health care rationers. And rationing health care with profit as motivation instead of the benefit for people is IMO immoral. |
