to manage the terrain. (sslr) You can't always do that. Small spaces beat fireballs, a decent abjurer beats any spells or hexes a mage can bring down. You need to be able to bring more than one type of damage to bear on an any opponent, else you may find yourself the only effective counter to the avatar of tiamat that's coming through the portal after she's silenced the room and put some nasty wards on the altar that's opening the thing. I survived however, the druid's familiar and the sorceress did not.
