Birth control on a generation ship by SnappingTurtle2014-03-07 13:44:54
I'd be tempted to thin kthe reverse by basher20 2014-03-07 14:16:44
It would, however, tend to depend on how the compliment was chosen. If the initial crew is chosen on a "best and brightest" basis, I would think the tendency would be towards low fertility, since the primary drivers for large family size, high childhood mortality, economic exploitation, or care in old age, are not going to apply. You will likely also have people who gain their emotional satisfaction from their work or achievemnt rather than family.

So I suspect the effort will be ensuring there are sufficient numbers and genetic variability in the continuing population to maintian viability, rather than having to artificially limit population on such ships.
