Randy Cassingham of ThisIsTrue.com has a wonderful post in CrankyCustomer about his 'Dell Hell' experience, and the painful learning curve about Consumer(cheap)-grade vs. Commercial(sturdier)-grade vs. Workstation-grade lappies.

Desktops and towers apparently have the same progression.

Our traveling teacher friend has been getting Panasonic Toughbooks (refurb's from BobJohnson.com) to withstand the beating of travel, but more lately (post-surgery) finding a little (2-3#) netbook is easier for her to carry.

We'll find out this summer what OS she'll need next, replacing WXP/Ubuntu-dual-boot (prob'ly W7/Unn-LTS).
