CPU/Laptop question for the UFiecle: by ideur2014-03-07 00:30:09
  Here's a data point: by bobmon2014-03-07 02:56:45
A corroded screw, damaged head by SciSSorS2014-03-07 04:14:10
Haven't seen them in such small sizes but I have by shargo 2014-03-07 04:58:58
succeeded in same situation by drilling into the head until it pops off and then been able to remove the screw with a pair of pliers once everything is apart.

To select drill size: You want just a shade over the nominal screw size (eg 2.8 to 3.0 mm for a M2.5). Use a sharp (new) drill and carefully align it to the centre of the screw.

Have a vacuum lying right next to the screw while drilling to collect all shavings.

To choose new laptop: Your main problem will be to find a good screen since these /&%(\£$ wide-screens destroyed the market. Quite few laptops exists with a vertical resolution at or above 1200. AFIAK only top of the line series got them.
When it comes to CPU I have yet to see my soon three year old laptop strain it's CPU, a four core AMD Phenom and that includes 3D CAD work (Inventor AND Solidworks at the same time on some occasions). Cost for that machine was ~600$.
My conditions to select it: AMD CPU, as many cores as possible, dedicated GPU and GPU memory and that was my limit in price.
Major compromises: Battery life and screen resolution (900 in vertical).
