CPU/Laptop question for the UFiecle: by ideur2014-03-07 00:30:09
  Here's a data point: by bobmon 2014-03-07 02:56:45
This is just above your price range, but it gives an indication of what's available.

Lenovo ThinkPad w540 "portable workstation" ---
- up to a Core i7 processor, up to 3.9GHz
- 15.6" display, 1980x1080 or 2880x1620 pixels
- up to 32GB memory
- HD 500GB - 1TB, or SSD 128GB - 512GB
- 5.57 pounds
- starts at $1320 (U.S.)

The Intel Core i7 is a four-core processor, running two threads per core. The i5 is a two-core processor.

I have an older ThinkPad w700 that's starting to throw temperature alerts, and I can't open it up to service anymore because a key screw has become corroded into its socket and the head is stripped out. But I like mine a lot. Actually just realized it has *two* HD bays (I don't think that's true of the new models, mine is a really big machine that won't fit in most laptop bags.)
