Please help me find a philosophy/spirituality/etc. by oot2014-02-08 16:33:27
A Buddhist friend taught me that it's not static.. by firehawk2014-02-08 17:35:42
I keep feeling drawn back, but by oot 2014-02-08 18:07:42
There are certain teachings that I just cannot accept, and some of them are pretty fundamental to Buddhism:

1. No self. If there is pain, there is an entity to have the pain. Maybe not a permanent, fixed entity like a soul acting in the world, but the fact that you exist in a state of continuous change doesn't mean that you don't exist. Carrying that view to its conclusion, when someone has a broken leg it would be more important to remind them that there is no self to feel the pain than it is to get them painkillers and set the bone. And that... feels like nonsense.

2. Severing all desire/attachment/clinging. I think that some of it is worthwhile, even if it does sometimes hurt.

3. Taking the no-killing thing to an extreme. If a wasp gets into my apartment, I genuinely do not see what is wrong with killing it, as long as I do so quickly and don't leave it to suffer half-squashed.

...maybe I just understand certain doctrines wrongly and need to find some time to talk to a Buddhist teacher about all of these things (and probably not the same one I had been seeing) but I am afraid that holding these views is fundamentally incompatible with Buddhism, and I don't think that I am likely to ever change them.
