So MIL might have the keys & a parking stub, but she's under no obligation to go get the car.
Any fees, fines, or other charges the car might generate will eventually find their way back to SWMBO, not MIL, thus defeating the purpose.
However, if the car were in MIL's name, then leaving it in a long term parking lot & "accidently" mailing the parking stub to her in a month or two might be amusing.
Assuming the car hasn't been ticketed & towed to an impound lot first, generating a ticket fine, a towing charge, and the impound storeage fee.
