I use the blocksize as in "bs=1024k", "bs=1M" should work too.

Actually, giving the blocksize is just a way o speed up the process
(a lot) because it makes 'dd' write data in biger chunks than by
default (which would be 512 byte, what used to be the standard size
of a disk block).

Writing bigger chunks is benefical for any kind of flash storage
(be it a USB thumb drive, an SD card or an internal SSD) because
there are less write operations. If you only write 512 byte per
chunk and the drive has bigger blocks in its hardware, then each
hardware block would have to be written several times (bear in
mind that flash storage behaves physically different than magnetic
storage, you can flip bits into one direction easily but to do
the other direction the whole block has to be cleared and be
rewritten completely), which would wear down the flash storage
much more quickly...
