Though the it's more likely that the OS was just hosed. Other problems had been brewing for a while. Most of it seems to stem from a failed dist-upgrade late last month. The original OS install was a few versions out of date, and an attempt to upgrade it really just confused things. Notably, several packages couldn't be retrieved and a few other packages failed to install. At least one of those looked like a kernel module update. Things were slowly getting worse, and Minecraft getting strangled was the last straw. One example of the weirdness was that opening a folder from within a program (eg, opening the Textures folder using the button in Minecraft) caused the folder to open using a web browser, not the file manager. Things were a tad crufty and needed the cleaning.
