updates into the disk image, it does nothing to the installed system it is running on. I have not built a UBCD for some time now, however as mentioned it is not an overly difficult process.

I recommend a live Linux CD. Gentoo has been mentioned for a CLI-only, there is also Debian, Ubuntu, and a number of other Linux live CDs to choose from. Knoppix (if it is still maintained) is, i believe, based on Debian. It used to be really good with hardware detection as well and would run on just about anything.

I usually visit distrowatch.com when looking for a different LiveCD for something (I use Ubuntu for most things).
