Handy UFies: Is my washing machine dead? by Baenlynn 2014-02-04 21:50:17
I knew it was coming, but I think the washer may have just packed it in, in a manner that will cost more to fix than to replace. It's a front-loader circa-15 years old, held up very well, but as far as I've been able to tell after two hours of pulling bits off and poking around, there is something wrong with either the drive shaft (however long it is) or the bearing that spins the drum. What's happening is the drum will oscillate like a spirograph as it spins, occasionally scraping against the casing. This all started about two hours ago when it was spinning out a few sheets.

About how much would I be in for to fix it? Because if it's going to be more than about $400. I'm just going to go get a new top-loader right now. Considering how long it would likely take just to identify the problem I'm betting that the labour just to see what needs fixing will be more than what it's worth for a new one.

Suggestions?
