Our population has increased enormously because of improved techniques in gathering and handling food. Our ability to stay ahead of the demand/need starts with the bright people that study how to get even more food for us. That's why the farmers won out over the raiding hunter/gatherers - the farmers could sustain a greater population with less labor. Resting on our achievements is probably a big mistake.
