The thing with making GMO crops poison resistant is not only that
this enables the field to be sprayed with a poison only the crop
can withstand.
What does it mean that this poison is so powerful? Probably that
it's far more poisonous than others. There's inherent danger in
that alone.
Another thing is that it lures farmers to use much more of the
poison than they'd ordinarily do, which heightens the chance of
some of it getting into the food product.
As for the GMO crop being prepared to be unusable for further
breedings, there are several aspects in this one as well.
One is of course the greed of GMO producing companies to force
farmers to buy new seeds ever and ever, not only the posion that
goes along with it, so the companies can maximize their profit.
Another might be they rightly (attempt to) keep their stuff from
getting into the open so other plants adopt the manipulated genes
and making the poison useless. Which is something that is bound
to happen, sooner or later anyway.
So far the yealds have not improved magically, the improved
defense against pests is only marginal as well an the dependence
has ruined lots of smaller farmers, especially in poorer countries.
Sounds like an all out success to you, doesn't it? I'd rather say
if it weren't for the GMO companies' profits it'd be an outright
disaster.
