"The cloud" grabbed far more than just Microsoft by the short and curlies, too. It's the panacea of all software manufacturers: they control the whole thing except a dumb viewer. All large software vendors fall for that near-return to the mainframe days sooner or later.
The reason this guy got the nod is because he built it into a successful business for them. It doesn't matter whether the business model is viable in the long term, or whether it's a pipe dream; he made it work.
And if his actions come even close to his words, it sounds like he's had it with the "two project managers for every developer" staff profile, the divisions competing with each other to no one's benefit, and the idiotic process roadblocks that force people to jump hoops just in order to fix a bug. If he gets rid of even 20% of all that, the company is much stronger for it.
Make no mistake, I'm not a fan. I hope someone better comes and takes their business. But may the best company win. If 2020 Microsoft is better than 2010 Microsoft and every other company out there, so be it. |
