This is a thought that has been running around in my head for the last few weeks regarding the sudden interest in raising the minimum wage.
Note: I have no factual evidence to point to, this is strictly stuff I've been wondering about.
I can't help but feel that there is an ulterior motive to all of this and here is my theory. With the ACA now being fully implemented and the government discovering a much larger number of people are going into medicaid than originally predicted, the government is trying to kill two birds with one stone. By raising the minimum wage, some people who are currently eligible for medicaid may no longer be eligible for it and therefore have to get regular insurance, thereby saving the government money. Further, it also increases the payroll taxes (FICA & Medicare) that the government collects to help finance those underfunded programs.
I will admit that I don't know how much of a subsidy those people would then be able get to help pay for insurance, so it may not be saving the government anything. Links to hard numbers would be appreciated. |
