A tiny triumph. Dwarfed by anything you'd see in the news carrying that headline. But it's a triumph for me.
Went out to eat at ~11pm on a Monday night.
Choices: fast food, Denny's/IHOP/Waffle House, more fast food. Most grocery stores closed, and the ones that are open are so pitifully low on produce and picked through crap, it's not even worth entertaining, even if I had a fully viable kitchen and the "oomph" to use it.
I decide to go to a sports bar/microbrewery I know of near the college (Arizona State), because I know they make EXCELLENT personal-sized pizzas using all fresh ingredients and bread made from some of their best beer. (I don't drink beer and despise the taste, but I'd even buy one of theirs and drink it to be polite if I had to.)
Then, looking over the late-night menu, I see something I didn't expect to see: Thai hummus. Like normal hummus, but with peanut sauce and some spices (good ones, too; it had a kick) mixed in.
I REAAAAALLY wanted that pizza, (margherita pizza, and a very good example of it) but I was a good boy (and adventurous, which is always a good sign) and got the hummus.
It had a little kick to it, but not too much to just enjoy and eat in quantity without having tissue nearby. The pitas also seemed as if they were made with their beer, but that could have just been my imagination. Whole-grain, I think, but not too sure. Either way, very good.
So, I had a bit more gluten that I would choose for my ideal meal, but FAR less fat and nothing animal in nature (unless pitas had something).
Score one for the vegan zombie.
I feel good.
Insignificant in the grand scheme of things (and really, any scheme beyond just me) but a triumph of will over my own food addictions (shared with many) that I can be proud of, even if just for about 5 seconds. |
