another bit of trouble out of her after that. Wasn't exactly her friend, but didn't need or particularly want to be. I was her boss, and we did our jobs, and no troubles at all. She even eased off the drinking if I remember right. Never was all that bright a bulb, but she was a clerk and she kept the typewriter going and the forms up to snuff, so she was bright enough, I suppose.
I hadn't really thought much about the aftermath or outcomes, though the Colonel did ask me a couple of pointed questions regarding her a few days later. I told no lies, and he asked no questions that I couldn't tell the truth about, and he didn't want to get too detailed an answers anyway, so we were cool from on high, too.
The bruises went away. I suspect the lesson stuck. I do know one thing.
If I moved too quickly or feinted in her direction, from that day on she blanched and flinched.
Don't see that I mentioned this, by the way. She was a good five inches or so taller than I and out-weighed me by a bit, if it matters.... |
