You can already use your SmartPhone's GPS for outdoor navigation, but what if you couple the camera, accelerometer, magnetic compass, and other sensors to assist you doing it inside?
I can imagine this being *extremely* helpful for the Blind/VI folks, as you could perch your SmartPhone on a shoulder like a parrot, camera facing forward, and listen to it telling you about obstacles, pathways, stairs, escalators/elevators, reading signs to you, warning of low hanging objects/branches, etc.
It would be just as usefull outside, since it could tell you if you're walking on a sidewalk or just the street, read street signs, tell you building numbers, read bus stop numbers, alert you to the presence of traffic, say "Step left around that lump of dog poop", etc.
I would *love* to have something like this at my disposal.
I'd still use my cane, but I wouldn't feel so vulnerable & lost having my phone describing everything around me in real time.
=-)
