Obviously, in this role, they're not the reasonable one, and you're not the work-shirking idiot. But that's one reason why I could see a reasonable person exhibiting this behavior...being in a position where they need info, assuming you won't call back unless you have no idea what it's about might have been the reasonable course for some.
