MechJeb automates some of the basic flying for you. The assent autopilot gives you a nice repeatable assent path and can time the launch to meet up with an orbiting station, it will normally put me in a circular(ish) orbit within 20km of the station. It then has a smart targeting mode to keep you pointing at/away from your selected target, your relative velocity to the selected target etc... And finally it has a landing autopilot that will put you down nice and slowly right on the selected spot. Just don't ask it to land you on the side of a hill, you'll still fall over ;-) The base game has added a nice orbital maneuvers interface to make it easier to match orbits and get the correct direction and duration for a burn, that eliminates a lot of guesswork and the need for some of the other mechjeb features.
