If you have polyphase input then you can use a cycloconverter. It slices! It dices! It rearranges the bits! Read more about the cycloconverter at Wikipedia.

It says in the article that the output frequency has to be quite a bit different from the input frequency. Significant power losses still occur, but it is better than AC->DC->AC.
