The only way they could get anything approaching lethality was to have a round in the chamber of a weapon. Even though the rounds were contained in a magazine, the metal of the magazine doesn't even come close to containing the explosion enough to cause the bullet to go any significant speed. About the only thing that the magazine itself would provide is more shrapnel. I also seem to remember that it took insane temperatures to 'cook' off the rounds (maybe it was an electric oven and the magazine fell on the heating element?).
