full time to eliminate power issues and deliver clean power to the servers. battery kicks in in case of power outage with basically no interruption in power. course i've also heard of some places that are using flywheels* instead for the scant few minutes it takes for a generator to fire up. *think large disks in a good vacuum spinning at quite high speeds.
