The sensors will pick up IR. Most cameras have a filter in them to block it, it looks like a clear plastic film somewhere in the lens assembly.
All you do is remove that film and you have a camera which can also see IR.

If you add a visible light filter then you have an IR only camera. Although that may screw up the auto focus on the camera.
