Network UFies (fiber in particular) - a question by radiowave911 2013-02-21 10:39:56
Does a device exist that will tell me if a fiber or GBIC/SFP/<insert-interface-here> is actually emitting light when there is no visible component to the light (or it is a laser source)?

We had a failure this morning on one of the redundant links between our core network and the Passive Optical Network we are starting to roll out. For some reason, the failure was not detected by network monitoring (that is a whole other rant). I suspect one of the SFP modules experienced a failure. The problem is, these operate at 1310nm. Given that it is a long-haul transceiver, it is likely laser as well.

Short of frying my retina, how can I tell if it is emitting light?
