Something around 90 percent is considered a "high-efficiency" inverter. There are some that approach 94 percent, but that's currently (Heh! I made a pun...) about the limit. Most of the losses are in component heating. All Hail Entropy.

The most efficient ones use no (or fewer/smaller/air-wound (vice ferrous core-wound) ) coils and transformers, as a large portion of the heating losses are in hysteresis and core heating. Transistors and integrated circuit components waste less energy as heat than transformer coils.
