This statement is generally true:

The good news is that although you made a bad choice, you did not make the worst possible choice of ignoring the problem entirely.
Nor did you make my worse-but-not-worst choice of *driving myself* to the hospital. Not only could I have gone away, but what if I had caused an accident?
I got lucky - I was taken back by the admissions staff within minutes. There were no ambulances in the queue, and only one critical walk-in ahead of me (lady in the 32+ week range, in extreme pain).
The good news is that he's still with us. Stupid wasn't fatal in this case, so you have the opportunity to not repeat that mistake.
Take care of yourselves - he's going to need a lot more help than normal over the next few weeks, and that means you are going to need more help, too. Don't be too stubborn to ask for help - people will understand.
