Invoke: Uficle - dvd stuff. by leejam2012-06-06 06:11:38
I had the exact same issue. by AndyA 2012-06-06 09:10:48
Although rather than making backup copies I recoded them to mpeg 4 and stream them from a network box to the TV via the xbox. That way there is no hunting around for the discs to start with.

The freeware solution I came up with was good old DVDdecryptor to rip to a .iso and then handbrake for the recode.
That worked for most things. For Disney DVDs I used makeMKV for the ripping part since they have newer security that a 10 year old app can't break.
Also I found 1 or 2 DVDs (out of 400+) where handbrake seemed to mess up the audio downmix to stereo, I would get the left and right channels just fine but the center channel with all the talking was very very faint.

Eventually I paid some cash and switched to AnyDVD and MediaConverter. That configuration has handled anything I throw at it, takes about 1/4 of the time to do the conversion (~5 minutes per hour of video on my system) and results in files that are about half the size for the same quality.

If you do want to burn to another DVD then as others have said DVDshrink is a good free option.
