| Erm, really? |

Today I got accused of being a racist. How did that happen? Read on:
I was with my family this morning at the consulate in town to apply for a new passport for one of my boys. I had to take them along as they needed to take his finger print for the passport (for a 4 year old o.O). The place is in a quiet residential area full of big villas. As it happened, the villa next to the consulate had a nice big parking public spot available which I used. No sings, barriers, gates to be blocked, somewhat shaded - just perfect really. Parked, went inside, and the process started. While davyddwife was filling up the forms she realized that it had been a few months since we'd checked how tall davyddson 1.0 was, so off I went to the car to get a measuring tape (engineers always have measuring tapes somewhere within easy reach).
Now comes the gardener (of subcontinental ancestry it appeared as he was also wearing a type of traditional clothing from that area) of the neighbouring villa and asks me to move my car right now so he can wash the road. I told him I'd be moving within about 5 to 10 minutes and had to hurry back to conclude my business in the consulate. He insisted. I told him "no, not going to do it, please wait for a moment" and disappeared inside the consulate.
Fast forward 5 minutes - we just had finished with the papers and the finger printing and were gathering bags and kids to leave, comes in the resident of the neighbouring in full local regalia and shouts at me at the top of his voice how I dared to disrespect his gardener and racially abuse him just because his skin tone was darker. Me: WTF?
The rest was some panicked consulate staff trying to calm their neighbour down, me insisting that I had not been disrespectful nor unreasonable in the circumstances which ended in the neighbour storming out angrily and banging shut the door of his car and having his driver speed off while we trailed him out and collected our car.
Again: WTF? |
