Suggests that (rounding the number of flips up, since you can't partially flip a coin) the equation can be simplified to 2^(n+1)-4. I don't know why though. .... Ok, I think I see why. The total number of flips is going to be 2^(n+1)-3 (including the first heads flip). That is one less flip than the total expected if you start with zero. Getting the first heads means you've eliminated one flip since you don't have to worry about getting a tails on the first flip. That is very hand wavy, but it makes sense to my tired head. Now, I'm going to sleep.
