What do you mean by "For example, links to YouTube which is a link to a site OFF the main advertiser are verboten"?

In general, what you describe about www.orafaq.com and free range kids I don't consider as "open comments", and I also think direct links to these sites would not be modded. I don't recall ever seeing a link to a site which is not already known as truly "open comment" to have been modded without the presence of "bad" open comments.

IOW, I think what you are asking for has already been the MO of the mods, and I fully support your request that people don't call the mods on direct links, unless there is evidence of bad comments. I have actually commented on some ID9K-ed links that there was no reason to do it, since the comments in question were not "open comments".
