Now in response to your critique of "surprise." Well, the facts from around the same time period likely explain the comment.
Why Aren't More Minorities Taking Advanced Math?
In a Global Test of Math Skills, U.S. Students Behind the Curve Jack Jennings, director of the Center on Education Policy, cautioned that the PISA survey measures application of basic math concepts in real life rather than scholastic achievement or theoretical skills such as calculus and algebra. He also noted that the United States is a much more diverse country than most of its competitors, with a significant proportion of minorities, who traditionally score lower on standardized tests.
One of the major problems facing the departments I have friends in now is cases being tossed for grammatical and mathematical errors in the evidentiary paperwork. These are not the kind of jobs that entrance standards should be lowered for just to help someone's self esteem. |
